Blast off with the Kalamazoo Nature Center at the Dowagiac District Library to explore the unknown right here on planet Earth! Space may be the final frontier, but sometimes we forget what makes our planet the perfect space station to base our investigation of the stars. Learn about our planet’s place in the galaxy, and how it is home to some truly extraordinary plants, fungi, and animals—even meet a few of their animal ambassadors! Some animals in Michigan are so spectacular, they seem almost alien!

A Universe of Stories: Summer Reading

A Universe of Stories: Summer Reading

Calling all Earthling Readers! This summer, let’s blast into space and take a tour of our solar system by reading as a community! For every 20 minutes you spend reading (or listening) to a book, you will help the DDL Spaceship make its way through all 8 planets.* The spaceship leaves Planet Earth on Monday, June 17 and has until Friday, August 9 to make it back! To do this, we need to fuel the spaceship with 56,000 minutes of reading. Every 7,000 minutes of reading logged by the community will get the spaceship to the next planet and hopefully back home again. Are you ready to go on this galactic getaway through the stars? As a community, we can do this!

Summer Reading is open to all Dowagiac District Library patrons. Those registering will receive a drawstring book bag and reading log. All reading log entries collected throughout the challenge will be entered into drawings for prizes in the following categories: kids, teens and adults.

For more information and to register, see Melissa Phillips upstairs in the Youth Services area or any of our “stellar” staff at the circulation desk.

*Sorry, Pluto. Also, we’ll track the spaceship and community’s cosmic reading journey through space in the library’s new “Celestial Stairway” — be sure to check it out!

Runs from June 17 through August 9.

Hey, families! Help us celebrate the 70th anniversary of a Disney timeless classic—Dumbo! While the new version is playing in theaters, come and see the original animated version for FREE at the Dowagiac District Library! This movie is rated G, which makes it a great choice for all ages, and its run time is a short 64 minutes, so even the wiggliest kids should be able to sit through it. The movie will begin at 10:30 am sharp upstairs in the Youth Area, so plan to arrive a few minutes early.
